Nassau County Photo Archives Center
Dedicated to the Preservation of Long Island's Prestigious History
Mission Statement
The Nassau County Photo Archives Center increases public knowledge of, and access to, the Nassau County Collection of historic photographs, glass plate and film negatives, and postcards. Our entire collection features images spanning the 19th and 20th centuries, between the years 1870 through the 1970s. Our mission is to offer improved access to our digitized collections for education, publication and exhibit opportunities through the preservation of Long Island History. Our website is a reflection of our goals to extend outreach and services to our users. Users of this information could include, but are not limited to: researchers, genealogists, authors, historians, students, and historical societies.
We seek to preserve the unique Long Island History through the digitization of our entire collection. Currently, approximately 20,000 of over 200,000 prints and negatives have been digitized. This is an ongoing process as we work to achieve our goal of providing online access to our collection in its entirety.
The Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation & Museums acknowledges the rich and informative attributes of the information contained in its collection of photographs at the Archive Center. The creation of this digital library intends be a driving force in an ongoing outreach and dissemination project of Archive Center services. This website serves as a small sample of our collection in relation to the early history of Long Island's prestigious Hampton communities. Its purpose is to highlight the roots of Long Island tradition, culture and lifestyle through photographs taken by a local photographer in the early 1900s.
The Nassau County Photo Archives Center Digital Library Project is an effort to raise awareness of the usefulness, uniqueness, a vast collection of resources that are relatively unknown to those in pursuit of information pertaining to Long Island history in the early 1900s. The Archive Center selected five photographs from its own collection to be displayed in this digital library, and will include additional information about the few existing web resources that provide supplemental information about this topic.
